I hope your week is off to a good start. With WWDC just around the corner, rumors of what might get announced are beginning to flutter. Last week, we saw news from Apple (predictably) as well as new features for Android (and more). Let’s dive in!

Week 22 (05/26–06/01)

WWDC24

Apple… sent out the official invite and schedule for WWDC24. June 10–14 should be “Action packed” with events including the famous Keynote, a Platforms State of the Union, and various sessions and labs. Check out this more complete list of activities from Apple.

Also, Apple… announced the finalists for the Design Awards 2024. Finalists are divided into seven categories — including the addition of Spatial Computing — and split into the two subcategories of Apps and Games. Winners will be announced at WWDC (see above) and can serve as an example for app teams to aspire to.

Google… announced the next Android feature drop. Supported devices will soon see seven new features including editing sent messages, moving video calls and sharing hotspots between devices. The updates will be rolling out throughout May and June.

Spotify… offers refunds for the now defunct Car Thing. User were outraged after the previous week’s news that the unit would stop working — breaking the promise to keep it operational. Car Thing was an alternative for people who lacked a full infotainment system in their vehicle and saw 2 million waitlist sign-ups prior to public release in 2019.

Instagram… increased protection against harassment for teens. The update allows teen users to limit interactions to only accounts in their “Close Friends” group. It is a good faith move by the app’s parent company, Meta, to further combat online bullying and harassment.
